Last week, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced her 2024-2029 European Commission lineup and published mission letters for her incoming cabinet of Commissioners, outlining their priorities. These letters highlight the progress and cooperation we have been observing in recent years, but also convey the responsibility and the great expectations of Europeans in a time of global instability.

In her letter to Commissioner-designated Ekaterina Zaharieva, the President appeals to an intensification of the efforts towards the implementation of EU Missions and all the framework instruments of Framework Programmes to their full potential until 2030. A highly ambitious demand, only surpassed in magnitude by the need for such instruments.

In addition, in a letter to Olivér Várhelyi, Commissioner-designate for Health and Animal Welfare, President Ursula von der Leyen denotes “I would like to ensure the implementation of the European Beating Cancer Plan (EBCP)”.

ECHoS congratulates the reference to EU Missions and to EBCP and stresses that it is key to guarantee the development of coordinated actions between Cancer Mission and the EBCP. The fight against Cancer must continue, and no one can do it alone.

Check the list of Commissioners-designate and their portfolios, reflecting the ambitions set out in the Political Guidelines.
